  • I3A Formal ISO Standards Activity

Secretariat for the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 42 (ISO/TC42) on Photography

I3A serves as Secretariat for the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 42 (ISO/TC42) on Photography. In this role, I3A represents the ISO experts on worldwide imaging standards. Dating back to 1947, TC42 originally focused on developing international standards for traditional silver halide photography and the recycling of imaging products. Today, the focus is on advanced digital imaging standards. I3A also serves as administrator of the USA Technical Advisory Group for the ISO/TC42 committee (USA/TAG/ISO/TC42), the coordinating body for USA positions on ISO standards.

Participants in I3A’s TC42 activities have an opportunity to influence the development of critical industry standards, recommend best practices and aid the creation of technical reports that define the future of the imaging ecosystem. USA-based company participants are also eligible to join the USA Technical Advisory Group for ISO/TC42.

    More About TC42

TC42 standards are approved using the formal ISO process. Stages include NP ballot by country, development of technical documentation, approval by the TC as a committee draft, country approval as a draft international standard, resolution of comments, and approval as a final draft international standard and, finally, as an international standard.

The scope of TC42 is primarily standardization of still picture imaging, chemical and electronic, including:

    • Definitions for still imaging systems
    • Methods for measuring, testing, rating, packaging, labeling, specifying and classifying the dimensions, physical properties and performance characteristics of media, materials and devices used in chemical and electronic still imaging
    • Specifications and recommendations of logical and physical characteristics, practices, interfaces and formats for still imaging capture, processing, and output systems
    • Methods, measurements, specifications and recommended practices for storage, permanence, integrity and security of imaging media and materials, and imaging media disposition

    TC42 Working Groups include:

    WG3 - Image Evaluation

WG3 focuses on developing standards pertaining to instruments and methods for the quantitative evaluation of photographic printing and other imaging systems as manifested in qualities such as density and resolution, of the resultant images. The group’s scope includes:
    • Quantitative evaluation for response of imaging materials and devices to image-forming agents, such as the sensitivity of photographic film to light
    • Quantification of image-forming agents, such as spectral power distribution of exposure lamps, and conditions for viewing images
This scope specifically excludes the specialized technologies that are exclusive to motion pictures, television, graphic arts, and micrographics.

    WG4 - Photo Equipment

WG4 focuses on developing standards for apparatus used for exposing, printing, and viewing photographs.

WG5 - Physical Properties & Permanence of Imaging Materials

WG5 focuses on developing standards and recommended practices for physical properties, permanence behavior and the effect of environmental factors on imaging materials.

    WG6 - Photochemicals and Processing

WG6 focuses on developing standards for photographic processing supplies, equipment, and procedures.

    WG8 - Films & Papers: Dimensions & Packaging

WG8 focuses on developing specifications for dimensions, identification, packaging, and related characteristics for photographic films, papers and plates used for imaging.
This committee’s work does not include standards or recommended practices for printing plates.

    JWG17 - Dental Film

(Joint working group with TC42, TC106 - Dentistry, and the International Dental Federation - FDI)
The focus of JWG17 is to develop ISO 3665, a specification for Photography - Intra-oral dental radiographic film.
    Convener : Dr. G. Wilson (ISO/TC106)

WG18 – Electronic Still Picture Imaging

WG18 focuses its efforts on standards development in the following areas:
    • Standardization of definitions, dimensions, methods of measurement and test in the field of monochrome and color electronic still photography
    • Specification of methods for image data interchange between traditional photographic media (input and output) and electronic form (input and output)
    • Device interface requirements
    • Data interchange requirements, including but not limited to image compression, transcoding, transmission methodology and color space specification
    • Specification of storage media formats and data attributes
    • Specification of image processing methodology for electronic still photography image data
    • Rating and classifying performance characteristics of devices and materials used in electronic still photography
    • Development of recommended practices for assurance of image integrity and security

    JWG20 - DSC Color Characterization

    (Joint Working Group with TC130)
This International Standard specifies color targets, metrology, and procedures for the color characterization of digital still cameras (DSC) to be used for photography and graphic technology. Such characterization is limited to DSC data that either has not been processed for color, or has been processed to estimate scene or original colorimetry (as opposed to the colorimetry of a reproduction).
This International Standard also defines a metamerism index to be used for quantifying the color analysis capabilities of DSCs.

    JWG21 - Densitometry

Revision of the ISO 5 Series (Joint effort between TC42 and TC130) This Joint Working Group was established to prepare revisions to the following standards:
    • ISO 5-1: 1984 (R1994) Photography - Density measurements - Part 1: Terms, symbols and notations
    • ISO 5-2: 2001 Photography - Density measurements - Part 2: Geometric conditions for transmission density
    • ISO 5-3: 1995 Photography - Density measurements - Part 3: Spectral conditions
    • ISO 5-4: 1995 Photography - Density measurements - Part 4: Geometric conditions for reflection density

JWG22 - Colour Measurement and Management

Scope: To develop the ISO opinion on standards developed by the Joint Project Team on Colour Measurement and Management of IEC/TC100/TA2.

    JWG23 - Extended Colour Encodings

Scope: Develop a set of requirements to be met by any extended-gamut colour encoding that is to be used for digital photography and/or graphic technology applications involving digital image storage, manipulation and/or interchange.

    JWG24 - Viewing Conditions

(Joint with ISO/TC130 – Graphic technology) Revision of ISO 3664: 2000 Graphic technology and photography – Viewing conditions
