I3A's CPIQ Initiative

Visit the CPIQ page on the I3A members site (members only)

CPIQ’s goal is to remove poor image quality as the top barrier to the utilization and enjoyment of camera phone images by consumers, and to provide a standardized means of measuring and communicating image quality for vendors. Ultimately, the group will produce a complete set of image quality testing metrics and methodologies, enabling a consumer-oriented image quality rating system.

  • CPIQ is made up of key players in the mobile and traditional imaging industries;
  • CPIQ is promoting growth of the camera phone imaging ecosystem;
  • CPIQ’s results will encourage consumers to take, share, print and enjoy images captured on their camera phones.

Phase 1 of the CPIQ Initiative – Accomplishments

The CPIQ group has completed Phase 1 of the initiative. The white paper contains an evaluation of existing best practices and industry standards and identifies key measures/metrics in each of several critical CPIQ areas. The camera phone photospace is described and an initial subjective evaluation method for CPIQ is discussed.

Special Thanks to the following companies for their work on Phase 1:

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
DxO Labs
Eastman Kodak Company
Flextronics International
Foveon Inc.
HP
Micron Technology
Motorola
Nethra Imaging
Nokia
NVIDIA
Palm
Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications
Sensata Technologies
Sprint

Phase 2 of the CPIQ Initiative Is in Progress

Phase 2 of the CPIQ Initiative is currently underway. The first investigative meeting was held in June 2007 during I3A's 61st Annual Conference in Denver, with 26 companies represented. This high interest level makes it clear that the industry is serious about the success of this ambitious project.

What Will CPIQ Phase 2 Accomplish?

Phase 2 of the CPIQ Initiative is currently underway. Phase 2 will drill down into the metrics associated with image quality - both subjective and objective - and develop repeatable, robust, test methods for evaluating these metrics.

Primary CPIQ Phase 2 Goals Are:

  • Identify and define image quality metrics that affect overall image quality:
  • Separate the objective and subjective components of these image quality metrics;
  • Focus on the metrics that have direct impact on image quality performance;
  • Develop and validate test methods for image quality metrics.
  • Develop a preliminary consumer oriented rating system to enable the clear communication of image quality to consumers by vendors;
  • Promote adoption of standard measurement techniques and specifications.

Who Should Join the CPIQ Phase 2 Initiative?

Carriers, handset manufacturers, component vendors, and any other interested imaging, software or hardware industry companies, from around the globe.
