Image Preservation Interest Group
The proliferation of digital imaging has increased the complexities and challenges of storing and preserving our collective visual heritage – choices are no longer as simple as scrapbook vs. shoebox. What happens when technology changes – what will replace the software and media in use today, and how will users access those images in the future? How do we encourage people to continue printing their pictures, and ensure that they will not fade or change color later on? I3A's Image Preservation Interest Group (IG) is focused on overcoming the obstacles – technological and behavioral — to keeping consumers' memories and other images safe and accessible for generations to come, using education, research, testing and the development of standards. It will also work to develop and promote solutions – such as photo books and the consumer-facing educational website SaveMyMemories.org, managed by the Consumer Photo Preservation Team — to these critical challenges.
Photo Books
Photo books are the new photo albums. The creativity and ease with which consumers can create photo books exemplify the advantages of digital photography along with the benefits of long-honed techniques for printing high-quality pictures. However, photo book adoption has suffered from lack of consumer awareness, misapprehensions about skills or equipment needed, as well as issues with production, including longevity, stability and non-standard output formats.
The Photo Book Initiative aims to create the definitions, specifications, test methods and templates needed for efficient and successful production, and, based on these standards, to promote photo books as a means for long-term image preservation, outside the technology migration issues that confront electronic systems.
