It is often desirable to measure image quality in a standardized fashion to facilitate interpretation of results and permit rigorous comparison with other experiments. Calibrated quality measurements are useful in evaluating the performance of capture, output, and display devices, media, image processing algorithms, and entire imaging systems. There are a number of psychometric methods, such as paired comparison, rank ordering, categorical sort, and magnitude estimation that are commonly used in image quality evaluations. For serious imaging practitioners, the benefits of variety and economy in digital capture device selection come as a mixed blessing, among dizzying performance specification hype. This "specsmanship" has created a bazaar-like atmosphere where manufacturers’ claims of resolution, speed, and dynamic range resonate like those of so many market barkers. Through regulation, education, and enablement, science-based performance standards vetted through ISO/TC42 will allow many of these claims to be supported or refuted. This paper details the technical content of these efforts and the challenges required to make these standards rugged and easily implemented, as an aid toward less ambiguous and informed device selection. | |

The battery and camera industries have maintained standards for several decades to help promote the industries and enable greater consumer acceptance, among other responsibilities. With the introduction of digital cameras in the 1990’s, both industries began reviewing how batteries power cameras to enable peak performance. The development of battery and camera standards involves extensive background work into how the components of the camera function as well as how consumers use the camera. Once all the variables are analyzed, the final product is a standard protocol for testing or evaluating a camera or battery. |
