Standard Reference Stimuli available from the I3A Standards Department
$100.00 ($90.00 Members)
The Standards Reference Stimuli (SRS) is boxed set of containing 21 10×15-cm (4×6-inch) reflection prints and a letter of explanation. The prints are arranged in 3 series, each depicting a single scene ("Birthday," "Downtown," or "Picnic") at 7 different quality levels, produced by varying the sharpness of the images through modification of the system modulation transfer function (MTF).
Each print is labeled in the bottom-left corner with a nominal Standard Quality Scale (SQS) value, as defined in ISO 20462-3. In brief, the SQS scale has one unit equaling one just noticeable difference (JND) of quality, and a zero point corresponding to quality so low that an image’s principal subject matter is hard to recognize. Images considered to be excellent typically have SQS values on the order of 30.
The calibrated SQS values of the prints at a viewing distance of 406 mm (16 inches) are specified in the letter accompanying the prints. On average, adjacent quality levels are uniformly spaced by 3.0 JNDs and range from about SQS 14 to 32. The SRS are primarily intended for use in quality ruler experiments, as described in ISO 20462-3, but can also be incorporated into other psychometric studies for purposes of calibration.
