Call for Entries: I3As VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Awards Program

    Monday, July 19th, 2010

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – March 21, 2010 – I3A (the International Imaging Industry Association; http://www.i3a.org), the leading global association for the imaging industry, is now accepting entries for the second edition of its pivotal new awards program, the VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Awards. The deadline to submit an innovation is July 31, 2010. Winners will be announced at the I3A Annual Conference, November 17-18 in San Jose, California. Details about VISION 2020 and entry forms can be found at http://www.i3a.org/about-i3a/awards/vision2020/.

I3A's vision is to enable the use of imaging to simplify and enrich people's lives through visual experiences that connect generations, communities, information and services. The VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Awards program seeks to energize, recognize and celebrate innovators whose ideas drive the industry toward the I3A vision of the future of intelligent imaging. VISION 2020's goal is to identify and present to the industry the innovative technology and product advancements that embody those possible future opportunities.

Winners of the inaugural VISION 2020 competition in 2009 were:

Gold: CogniSign Inc. (http://www.cognisign.com/) of San Francisco, for its image search technology platform that seeks to solve the '"images are a black box” problem found in a wide variety of consumer Internet and mobile applications

Silver: Tessera (http://www.tessera.com/) of San Jose, for its Imaging & Optics demonstrator:  a wireless "smart" camera module in a toy

Bronze: imsense ltd. (http://www.im-sense.com/) of Cambridge, UK, for its eye-fidelityTM Dynamic Range Correction technology, particularly as applied to real time video content processing

"Our first year's VISION 2020 submissions offered an impressive range of innovative ideas covering a wide variety of application areas, and we are eager to see more this year," said Lisa Walker, I3A President. "The 2009 winners embodied a spectrum of solutions, from technological problem-solving to just plain cool, at which our industry excels. I invite everyone to submit your best product and technology ideas to this year's VISION 2020 competition."

    VISION 2020 Awards Criteria

VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Awards will be given to those individuals, teams, organizations or companies whose product or service innovations enable the future vision. All entries must be imaging-related, but a broad view of imaging will be used. An innovation may be drawn from the areas of capture, storage, sharing, managing, processing or printing, among others.

Entries may come from anywhere along the product life cycle. Awards will be given for Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. Judges are an independent panel of technology press/analysts, industry analysts, academics, laboratory researchers or educators, entrepreneur, technologists, inventors and venture capitalists.

    VISION 2020 Submission Process

VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Award Submissions are due by July 31, 2010. The judges will review submissions during July and August, and an initial screening will determine the pool of finalists. Judges may request additional information from the finalists before the winners are selected, and some flexibility will be provided so that entrants may present their innovations in the best possible light. The number of finalists will be determined by the judging panel.  In September, the judges will choose Gold, Silver and Bronze winners, who will be notified in October.

The winning innovations will be announced at the I3A Annual Conference in November 2010, and the winners will be invited to present their innovations to the high-powered industry audience at the event. Winning innovations will also be publicized to the media and to the public.

Submissions may be made directly at the VISION 2020 section of the I3A Web site, at http://www.i3a.org/about-i3a/awards/vision2020/submission-forms/, or by downloading the submission form and emailing it. There is an FAQ (http://www.i3a.org/about-i3a/awards/vision2020/faq/) to answer questions about the Awards or submission process; or, entrants may call I3A at +1 (914) 285-4933 or send an email message to Vision2020@i3a.org.

Annual I3A Safety Awards Presented To Agfa, Fujifilm and Eastman Kodak

    Monday, July 19th, 2010

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – July 14, 2010 – The International Imaging Industry Association (I3A; http://www.i3a.org), the leading global imaging association, at a live webconference today announced the winners in its Safety Excellence Awards Program, which recognizes the highest levels of safety performance and leadership among the Association’s member companies.  Companies honored for their exemplary safety records during calendar year 2009 included Agfa Corporation (in two locations), Fujifilm (in four locations) and the Eastman Kodak Company (in 20 locations).

The awards seek to assist member companies in bringing about sustainable improvement in all areas of health and safety in the workplace.  Member company sites in all countries are encouraged to apply to the program.  Award recipient sites are determined using a combination of factors, including employing a minimum of 10 people, having an annual “Days Away from Work Incidence Rate” of 0.30 or less per 100 full time workers, and not having had a work-related “serious” regulatory citation or fatality in the last three years.

I3A's Safety Committee evaluates applications based on these and other criteria.  The committee’s charter is to provide a forum for benchmarking and sharing learning experiences in the areas of compliance with health and safety regulation, employee training and education, identification and analysis of workplace hazards, and prevention and control of workplace hazards.

"As our Safety Excellence efforts have helped improve safety at our member company sites over the years, we have had to tighten up the requirements for receiving an award," said I3A President Lisa Walker.  "I'm pleased to say that even though our criteria were steep to start with and have become even steeper, the companies' safety performances have become so good that to receive an award now requires near-perfection!  Employees at all these sites should be very proud of their efforts."

I3A's "Best in Class" safety awards further recognize the companies with the safest workplaces, as determined by injury and illness case rates for the year, in five different areas: manufacturing, warehousing, research & development/administrative, sales & service, and photo finishing services.  The company in each category that meets all the I3A Safety Excellence Award Program criteria and has the lowest OSHA Recordable Incidence (ORI) with the most hours worked during the calendar year is recognized as being best in its class among I3A member companies.

This year's "Best in Class" safety winners were:

    • Manufacturing — Eastman Kodak Company: Kodak (China) Company Limited, Xiamen, China
    • Warehousing — Fujifilm North America Corp., Hanover Park, Illinois
    • R&D/Administrative — Eastman Kodak Company: Rochester Research Laboratories, Rochester, New York
    • Sales & Service — Fujifilm North America Corp., Irving, Texas
    • Photo Services — Fujifilm North America Corp., Greenwood, South Carolina
