Whether consumers realize it or not, photo books are an ideal solution to the growing problem of image preservation; needed is a standardized means of explaining the quality and permanence of digital book materials.

Are Photo Books the Holy Grail for the Traditional Photo Industry?

By Lisa Walker, I3A President

Photo books are rapidly growing in popularity with consumers. One of the benefits of photo books is that they are one of the few instances where using digital photography may actually be easier and faster than its film counterpart, the photo album. Most people don't have the time and patience to actively keep their photographs organized in a photo album (hence the "shoebox" solution). But, with digital photos, easy-to-use software and Web-based services, consumers can quickly gather a set of digital photos and have them automatically organized into a photo book. They can make manual adjustments, or they can simply accept the recommended layouts, choose a cover and materials. Their custom photo book is printed and shipped to them or made available for pick-up at their local retail outlet. In-store options are also becoming widely available.

Whether consumers realize it or not, photo books are also an ideal solution to the growing problem of image preservation for consumer digital photographers. Consumers are overly confident of technology and its ability to safeguard their precious photos. Few are diligent about making backup copies of their digital photo collections. Today, making prints remains one of the most reliable methods of backing up digital photos. By selecting what should be their most cherished memories and printing them in photo books, consumers are also fulfilling the need to back up those collections.

The missing piece needed to complete the picture is a standardized means of communicating to users the quality and permanence of the materials used in printing digital books. While there are standards for measuring these components on an individual level, there is no way for buyers to know the permanence of the materials used in their digital books. For consumers, if we assume that they are selecting their most valued photos for use in the photo books they make, then it follows that they would also be interested in the quality of the materials used, and would be willing to select and purchase various quality levels (i.e.; 25 years, 50 years, 100+ years) when ordering photo books. The results would be an improved customer experience as a result of providing needed information for intelligent decision making on photo book purchases and increased satisfaction for consumers, knowing their favorite photo collections will be around for generations to come.

A rating system could be developed based on a synthesis of the image permanence factors identified and developed in I3A standards committees. Initially a minimum performance and quality requirement could be set, then the bar can be raised from this starting point. Other applications for digitally printed books could also benefit from a standardized permanence rating, backed by a credible industry association, rather than the claims of individual companies.

It may be that consumer education on the importance of protecting and preserving digital photo collections remains a hurdle that must be cleared before a rating system would have impact on consumers' purchasing decisions. The I3A SaveMyMemories.org website is a step towards achieving that educational goal, and clearly even greater efforts are needed.

There are many opportunities to work with other I3A members on solutions to resolve these industry problems and grow the photo book market. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Industry Briefs

Apple Buys Chip Designer
An Apple spokesman said Apple has agreed to buy a boutique microprocessor design company called P.A. Semi. The company, which is known for its design of sophisticated, low-power chips, could spell a new future for Apple's flagship iPhone, and possibly iPod products as well.

A Google Prototype for a Precision Image Search
Google researchers say they have a software technology intended to do for digital images on the Web what the company's original PageRank software did for searches of Web pages.

H.P. Unveils New Memory Technology
A team of Hewlett-Packard scientists reported in the science journal Nature that they have designed a simple circuit element they believe will enable tiny powerful computers that could imitate biological functions. The device, called a memristor, could make it possible to build extremely dense computer memory chips that use far less power than today's DRAM memory chips, which are rapidly reaching the limit in how much smaller they can be made.

Court Overturns Federal Accusation Against Rambus
A federal appeals court has overturned an order issued by the Federal Trade Commission that had accused the computer chip maker Rambus of antitrust violations. The F.T.C. order accused Rambus of failing to tell a standard-setting organization about its patented technologies while advocating those technologies as the new standard for computer chips.

Digital Photography Trends

Digital Camera Revenues in Asia-Pacific Region Increasing at Impressive Rate
15.2 million digital cameras were sold in the Asia-Pacific region in 2006, making it the third-largest market for consumer digital cameras. By 2012, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to capture 27% of the worldwide digital camera market, which will be equal to the EMEA region. Fifty-three percent of all unit sales in this region will occur in China.

UK Digital Camera sales continue to grow
With one in five cameras being sold in December 2007 and the whole year achieving yet another record for the number of digital cameras sold, the beginning of 2008 was going to prove interesting. There seems to be no let-up as the growth continues for the first quarter of this year, up 13% in volume and an encouraging 7% in value.

Digital SLR Shipments Reaches Record High in Japan
According to the Camera and Imaging Products Association (CIPA), domestic shipments of digital single-lens reflex cameras in March 2008 increased by 24.5% over the corresponding period last year, setting a record high of 127,500 units.

Top-Selling Digital Compacts for March
Each month the NPD Group ranks America's top-selling digital cameras based on unit sales. Here are the top-selling digital compacts for March 2008:
(1.) Canon PowerShot SD750 7.1MP 3x $175, (2.) Kodak EasyShare V1003 10.1MP 3x $170, (3.) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 7.2MP 3x $159, (4.) Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S700 7.2MP 3x $125 (5.) Canon PowerShot SD1000.

Hot-Selling DSLRs For 2008
This is definitely the greatest year yet to sell digital SLRs, kits and accessories. As the digital market becomes increasingly sophisticated and shootersof all stripes are demanding more from their cameras, it's not surprising that the DSLR has become the dominant factor in the camera specialty retailing market.

Photo industry braces for another revolution
Think of it as digital photography 2.0. In the last decade, photography has been transformed by one revolution, the near-total replacement of analog film cameras by digital image sensors. Now researchers and companies are starting to stretch their wings by taking advantage of what a computer can do with sensor data either within the camera or on a full-fledged PC.

Growth of Photo Print Volumes Driven by Several Factors in the U.S.
InfoTrends is forecasting that the digital photo print market in the U.S. will peak at 22 billion prints by 2011, before beginning a gradual decline in 2012. We believe that this print volume growth will stem from new digital camera buyers, as well as the growth of multiple digital camera households. Many new digital camera owners may turn to printing to emulate the experience they've had with film cameras, before “evolving” as a digital photographer and turning to other methods of viewing such as digital picture frames and photo books.

Before buying, focus on your photo needs
The Boston Globe tested 10 digital cameras, both a midprice and high-end model from Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Canon, and Olympus. They ranged from $180 to $400 with resolutions of 7.2 to 12 megapixels. In most situations, the cheaper 8-megapixel cameras performed as well as the cameras with resolutions higher than 10 megapixels. Still, some of the higher-end models offered unusual features that make a splurge worth considering.

100 in 100, Part II: Special Effects (Fish Eye)
Many advanced digital cameras have one or more creative modes built in. One of the most unique is the Fish Eye effect, which is available on certain Pentax compact cameras (Editor's note: Currently there's only one model with this feature, the Pentax Optio Z10). Usage of any creative effect, Fish Eye in particular, requires careful consideration, but under the right circumstances it can add a dimension to your images that can't be found otherwise.

At Kodak, Some Old Things Are New Again
Steven J. Sasson, an electrical engineer who invented the first digital camera at Eastman Kodak in the 1970s, remembers well management's dismay at his feat. “My prototype was big as a toaster, but the technical people loved it,” Mr. Sasson said. “But it was filmless photography, so management's reaction was, 'that's cute – but don't tell anyone about it.'” Since then, of course, Kodak, has embraced the digital world and the researchers who understand it.

Digicam on cops' shoulders to beef up surveillance
Cops in Chennai, India, are set to get futuristic, wearing digital cameras embedded on their jacket that will transmit the images of whatever they see to a centralised control room. The control room will give directions what is to be done, especially when a cop on surveillance at a crowded place or manning a busy traffic junction.

Nikon's Coolpix P80 is a Camera With a Range So Big, No Extra Lenses Are Needed
At first glance, Nikon's Coolpix P80 looks a lot like a digital single-lens reflex camera. Unlike many fixed zooms, this one has a huge range: it's wide enough at 27 millimeters to capture a group in a living room, and long enough at 486 millimeters to read a baseball glove's brand out on the diamond.

Nikon Posts Record Sales, Profit on Brisk Digital Camera Sales
Nikon Corp. said it set all-time highs in group sales and all other profit categories in fiscal 2007 due to brisk sales of digital cameras. In its consolidated earnings report for the year ended in March, Nikon booked a net profit of 75.48 billion yen, up 37.7 percent over the previous year, on a 16.2 percent increase in sales to 955.79 billion yen. Operating and pretax profits jumped 32.5 percent and 34.2 percent, respectively, to 135.17 billion yen and 120.14 billion yen. Nikon attributed the record-breaking performance to the continued growth of the market for digital cameras. In particular, the company captured the biggest share of the domestic market for single-lens reflex digital cameras.

Mobile and Camera Phone Trends

Nearly 20% of Mid- and High-end Mobile Devices Will Run a Linux Operating System by 2013
Linux, which has been much maligned by Symbian and Microsoft as a non-starter in the handset operating system market, is set to see strong growth as issues with framework fragmentation and silicon requirements are alleviated. ABI Research believes that by 2013, nearly one out of every five mid- or high-end mobile devices will use a Linux operating system.

Mobile Device Market Exceeds Expectations to Deliver 289 Million in 1Q 2008
“Operators and distributors continued to top up their inventories in 1Q 2008 after a particularly strong 4Q 2007,” says ABI Research vice president Jake Saunders. Shipment volumes in the developed markets have softened slightly due to the credit crisis, but emerging markets such as Asia-Pacific, South America, and the Middle East/Africa are delivering growth rate percentages in the mid-20s.

iPhone is the most popular cameraphone on Flickr
Not only is the Apple iPhone the most popular phone for browsing the Internet, it is also the most popular phone for uploading pictures. Flickr, the world's largest gallery of online pictures (by some accounts) rates the number of pictures uploaded by each type of camera phone. The results show that the iPhone has steadily pulled ahead of the top Nokia and Sony Ericsson Phones over the course of the past year.

The Oregon congressman sponsors the Hang-Up Act of 2008 and says the potential for trouble is too great
Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., announced plans to clarify federal law regarding the use of cell phones on commercial aircraft. The bill would prohibit the use of voice communication cell phones during flight, even if the airlines develop systems that meet safety and other regulatory standards. It would allow people to send text messages and e-mail on systems that many airlines are developing for use while airborne. The bill also would allow fliers to continue using the unpopular in-flight phones that are built into the back of seats.

Can the Cellphone Help End Global Poverty?
Several companies, including Intel, Motorola and Microsoft, employ trained anthropologists to study potential customers. Nokia's researchers more often have degrees in design. They act as emissaries for people like the barber or the shoe-shop owner's wife, enlightening the company through written reports and PowerPoint presentations on how they live and what they're likely to need from a cellphone, allowing that to inform its design.

Garmin launches GPS feature phone
Garmin unveiled a GSM HSDPA smartphone, called the nuvifone, that runs on its own operating system with GPS at its core. The phone includes Google local search, Garmin online services like traffic, fuel prices, hotel discounts, pedestrian navigation services, email, text, IM, camera and video camera functionality and an MP3 player. The company said it would launch commercially in the third quarter.

Nokia launches mobile wallet phone
Handset giant Nokia introduced the Nokia 6212 classic, a new 3G handset featuring integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies enabling users to share content and access services as well as conduct payments and ticketing transactions. According to Nokia, travel tickets may be charged over the air, eliminating waits at service counters – users can securely store their credit card info on the 6212 classic and access accounts directly from the handset.

Sony Ericsson brings Flash, Java together for phones
Sony Ericsson's Project Capuchin will allow software developers to create applications for mobile phones that can use pieces of both Java ME and Adobe Systems' Flash Lite to create their applications. The company plans to release a set of APIs (application programming interfaces) and a software development kit in the second half of this year.

Sony Ericsson ships 22.3M phones in 1Q
A slowing economy and rising component costs didn't stop handset maker Sony Ericsson from reporting a 2 percent increase in handset shipments. The firm said in first quarter 2008 it shipped 22.3 million handsets, a 2 percent increase year over year.
