The President’s Focus

Media Mashup - Aisle 5

As we recover from CES and gear up for this year’s PMA, it’s a good time to consider where the landscape is changing, and where it is not. For decades, industry visionaries have described the future in terms of convergence. They don’t always agree on identifying the devices and media to be combined for what use scenario, but they have been, generally, right about the converged future.
Lisa Walker, President, I3A
Lisa Walker
The new “media mashup” environment is creating great confusion – and opportunity
Convergence tends to convey visions of strange combinations of various hardware devices, devised by some mad scientist in a lab. But with media and converged devices now squarely ensconced in the hands of all citizens, the picture has changed once again.
The ability to deliver video over high speed Internet connections, in an efficient, high quality way was key in breaking down the traditional barriers. Now, video is everywhere: iPods, MySpace, YouTube and now Google video. Not only are the devices converging, but so is the content and the content provider. Media mashups (the combination of multiple types of media, pictures, video, audio, graphics all “mashed” together; it used to be called multimedia, but now that the inmates are in control, it needed a much more hip moniker) have eliminated the line between producers and consumers of media.

No longer is innovation the strict territory of scientists and developers. The citizen masses themselves are now empowered to invent and re-invent, often unintentionally, through the usage patterns they themselves develop in social networking interactions. Even the mass media are now being in part generated by citizen journalists. Media outlets routinely include audio and video captured on camera phones in their news broadcasts. Google video blurs the line completely: there is no distinction between personal or mass produced media. The threats and opportunities created by convergence, in the hands of converged consumers, are real and are here now.
Companies whose structure is centered around the more traditional models are struggling to identify their place in the converged, user-controlled future, experimenting with new approaches, while watching their current businesses erode. Future business models are uncertain, just as they are in the traditional photo industry. The blending and blurring of lines between content, devices, delivery methods and user needs creates great uncertainty and opportunity. The creative aspect is also squarely in the hands of consumers. Blogs give them a publishing platform instead of a printing press. Anyone can become a film or music producer. Google will even pay them advertising revenue for their efforts.
Identifying the exact opportunity for your business is the real challenge. Loss of control over delivery strikes fear into the hearts of photography and media companies alike. But the opportunities are there. If there is benefit to consumers, they will buy.
I encourage you to attend PMA and talk with your peers about the converged world we all live in, and how they are taking advantage of it. Learn about the future of media mashup sharing at the DIMA session I will moderate on January 30th.
The future is here, be part of it.

The State of Image Preservation

Steve Hoffenberg, Lyra Research

While the industry continues to drive forward developing new and fascinating image technologies, what about consumers? Join us for this first- of-its-kind live consumer panel, where we find out from real photo consumers what they think about the preservation issue, or whether they even think about it at all.

Preservation Issues Affecting Consumers

Moderated by Tony Stieber, HP, with panelists Dave Bunzel, OSTA;
Stephen Hagel, ACMEworks; Mark Mizen, Creative Memories; Troy Sechrist, Phanfare

Does advanced technology really benefit consumers who struggle with simple file copying and back-ups?
How can the industry truly make consumer’s lives easier?
How Can Metadata Help Solve the Image Preservation Problem?

Kevin Connor, Adobe Systems; Josh Weisberg, Microsoft Corp.

Each time a digital image is opened, tagged, edited or even printed, some image data is lost. Most consumers have no idea that loss of image data will degrade the stored memory to the point of rendering it unusable. This session will focus on new technologies that allow the persistence of image data throughout the image workflow.

Why the Preservation Issue Will Outlive Us All!

Herbert “Burt” Keppler

1925-2008

Keppler was known as a driving force behind the success of the Japanese camera industry, the champion of the single-lens reflex model that gained popularity in the 1960s and the publisher who rejected advertisements from fraudulent companies in his effort to clean up the photo mail order industry.
Under Keppler’s supervision, Modern Photography built the industry’s first independent test lab, a state-of-the-art facility. Its tests of lenses and cameras were the most highly regarded in the industry. The lab model was later replicated at Popular Photography.

Throughout his career, Keppler dedicated himself to promoting of the art of photography, and was active on the board of the International Center of Photography.

In 1985, Keppler was honored by being inducted into the PMA Hall of Fame. According to the PMA files, when PMA asked about his goals for the future, Keppler said: “I just want to continue doing what I’m doing — it’s like being employed in a toy shop — and getting paid to do it.”

Mobile and Camera Phone Trends

Deadline passes for 700MHz spectrum applications

The 700MHz band is sought by companies that wish to build wireless voice and data networks, and is probably the last time for a while that such a chunk of spectrum will be up for grabs. Google, Cox Communications, Frontline Wireless, and AT&T all appear to have submitted an application for a chance to bid on the spectrum, which is set to be freed up with the Federal Communication Commission’s decision to move everyone to digital television in 2009.

For Apple iPhone, Japan Could Be the Next Big Test

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs recently met with officials from Japan’s dominant mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc., including NTT’s president, Masao Nakamura, to discuss a deal to offer the iPhone in the country, say people familiar with the situation. These people say Apple has also been talking to Japan’s No. 3 operator, Softbank Corp. Executives from both NTT and Softbank have also made multiple trips to Apple’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

Verizon Embraces Google’s Android

Verizon envisions an explosion of wireless applications. The company currently offers about 800 applications such as music, games, and videos. The menu might have been even larger by now if not for the rigorous testing that Verizon requires of each developer for every application. Google is hoping the large, open scale of its Android platform will remove that hurdle, slashing development costs.

Personal Spotlight — Larry Scarff

Larry Scarff has been an active participant in the I3A Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Initiative since its early stages, and appreciates the opportunity to assist this diverse and distinguished team of researchers and engineers as its Technical Chair.
Larry Scarff

CPIQ Initiative Chair

Scarff has been developing and optimizing high resolution imaging systems for over 25 years. After graduation from the Rochester Institute of Technology (BS/MS Photographic Science, 1981), he worked at Itek Optical Systems for 10 years, participating in the development of advanced airborne and spaceborne reconnaissance imaging systems for military and scientific applications. His contributions included system modeling and simulations of systems for performance tradeoff analysis, image-chain optimization, expert-observer psychometric scaling and algorithm development for automatic target detection and recognition.
In 1991, Scarff joined the Polaroid Corporation where he directed the imaging team’s contributions toward the development of a high-resolution medical diagnostic printer. The system analysis considered the design, measurement and optimization of the image reproduction characteristics to satisfy the requirements for radiographic imaging. He worked with marketing and engineering groups to compare image quality against competitive products, assess radiologist’s performance per imaging modality via ROC analysis, and created and presented seminars on the principles of Polaroid’s unique imaging technique for hospital and imaging center luminaries.

Scarff established his own company, Digital Imaging Solutions, in 1997. The firm provided advanced imaging system expertise to the aerospace, radiographic, and professional imaging markets. His clients included Raytheon, Goodrich Aerospace, Agfa Medical Systems, Fischer Imaging, Kodak/Applied Science Fiction, IDX, Flextronics, and others. Successful collaborations include the optimization of mammographic presentation and display algorithms, multispectral and dual-band reconnaissance imaging characterizations, system modeling and simulation of a dry photo-to-digital consumer processing lab kiosk, and hardcopy/softcopy image optimizations for a cardiology workstation.

In 2004, Scarff joined Flextronics/Vista Point, and is currently the Sr. Director of Imaging Science, managing a geographically diversified team of imaging specialists providing support to all camera modules programs, including performance metric definition, optical and imaging test methodologies, and image quality analysis and characterization.

“My vision is that through technical collaborations, discussions, and face-to-face meetings, the CPIQ Phase 2 Initiative group will achieve our joint goals to develop 1) a set of industry standards that will provide a systematic approach to camera-phone image quality evaluations and 2) a customer-focused methodology for comparing camera phone models with respect to image quality based on their use model,” Scarff stated.

“I want to add a sincere thanks to our previous CPIQ Chair Ming Gao, whose recent corporate reassignment required that he step down. I know all wish Ming well with his new role and responsibilities within Hewlett-Packard, as we look forward to delivering on the priorities and goals established for the CPIQ initiative,” added Scarff.
