The President’s Focus

What Have We Done For You Lately? Plenty!

"Why are we here?" It’s a question that occurs to most people at least once in their lives, and one that certainly bears pondering from time to time. For today, however, I’m not talking about the big “Why are we here?” I’m focused on the question that, as I3A president, I think of daily: “What have we done for you lately?” I am happy to report the answer: “Plenty!”

"Grow the Pie" through vision, leadership and pragmatic solutions to emerging issues
We Grow the Pie

I3A is here to accelerate market growth for imaging products and services. Our goal is to bring market opportunities forward in time: the sooner new opportunities materialize, the greater the revenue generated. We grow the pie so that you can go after your bigger share.

We accomplish that mission in two ways. First, through leadership and a vision of the future. Second, we enable that future through collaboration, removing barriers to growth with Standards and Initiatives of vital importance to the market. We work on projects that reduce complexity and improve ease of use for consumers of imaging products. We make the future imaging ecosystem possible.

Key to success is communicating the vision to a wide enough audience so that we have the critical mass of members needed to be successful on our goals. There is indeed strength in numbers. And in the last year, our numbers have been growing.

I3A 61st Annual Conference

Meet Us at Denver's Curtis Hotel, June 6-8, 2007

Early Bird Registration Closes TODAY, Friday, May 11

The 61st Annual Conference, Inspiring Imaging Innovation, will look in depth at the emerging technology that will fuel success in the constantly evolving imaging industry, while exploring the accompanying business challenges.

As the industry's leading standards-focused association, with active members from all sectors of the industry, I3A is well positioned to survey the technical and business landscape, evaluate trends and issues, identify tomorrow's newsmakers, and investigate the innovations needed for the industry to navigate the continuous waves of change.
Last year's program received ratings of Excellent from 75% of its attendees. This year's event aspires to equal or surpass that score, with its combination of timely topics and speakers, intimate setting and organized meeting structure, and well-rounded mix of participants. Nearly half the 2006 attendees were from the technical side, one quarter had a business focus and the remainder were from marketing and the media. Over half of all attendees were high level executives or managers.
Keynote Address:
Steve Hoffenberg
The Future of Innovation
Steve Hoffenberg of Lyra Research
Where does the future of innovation lie? We kick off this year's conference by giving us insights into the market trends, news, analysis, and forecasts that are key drivers of future imaging technology innovation.
Innovative Technology Presentations:

  • Fluidic Lenses…A Vision of the Future
    Tim Rueth, Rhevision Technology, Inc.
Intriguing, new tunable lens systems for miniature and mobile imaging systems (camera phones, digital still cameras, video recorders). Come hear about this astounding new technology.
  • Compressive Imaging
    Richard Baraniuk, Rice University
Compressive Sensing is an emerging field that supports a new theory of Compressive Imaging. Its hallmarks include the ability to obtain an image with a single detection element while measuring the image/video fewer times than the number of pixels — this can significantly reduce the computation required for video acquisition/encoding.
  • Image Stabilization
    Kishore Moturi, InvenSense
This session explores new technology advances in gyro-based
advanced image stabilization techniques for next generation DSCs and
    camera phones.

    Ram Kakarala, Avago Technologies
Image stabilization is an important factor in improving image
quality in Digital Still Cameras with large (10-30X) optical zooms and
for camera phones where one-handed operation often leads to blurred images.

  David Doubilet
This year, we will be joined by world renowned underwater photographer David Doubilet. Doubilet has photographed over 60 stories for the National Geographic Magazine where he is currently a Contributing Photographer-in-Residence.
He has documented our changing underwater world since his first assignment with the Geographic in 1971.

Industry Issue Sessions:

  • Online Photo Services: Dead or Alive?

    Moderated by Kristy Holch, Analyst
Panelists: Sang Hung, Sprint; Chris Klingebiel, HP Snapfish; Amy McDonough, Webshots; Craig McGowan, Eastman Kodak Company

This session will take a hard look at the players in the online and mobile photo services sector. Have they fulfilled the promise of online photo services to consumers? Has the market achieved the growth of early projections? What does the future hold for this sector?

    • What's working, what's not;
    • Is there a next generation?
    • Is anyone making money?
    • What is the impact of mobile phones in this space?
    • What added value do consumers get with online and mobile services?
  • Camera Phone Image Quality Panel: Subjective Evaluation

Moderated by Nicolas Touchard, DxO Labs
Panelists: Jack Holm, HP; Paul Hubel, Foveon; Ping Wah Wong, Nethra Imaging; Mats Wernersson, Sony Ericsson

Lack of standards and metrics for measuring and testing camera phone image quality is one of the key issues affecting our industry today. Camera phones currently on the market with identical sensor (megapixel) resolution capabilities produce vastly different quality images. Carriers and suppliers know that image quality is important to consumers in order to motivate them to print or share those images (and thereby produce revenue). This panel session will focus on the importance of subjective evaluation – can we really measure how people decide which photos they like?
  • Metadata: The Elusive Grail of Imaging
    Moderated by Gene Mopsik, ASMP
Panelists: Richard Anderson, Richard Anderson Photography; Bryan Calkins, CogniSign; George John, Motorola; Nelson Nunes, PLUS

Everyone in the industry agrees: we need metadata! They also know that the technology is not rocket science, so why don't we have automated, intelligent, interoperable metadata? Combined with "smart camera phones" that know your calendar (ie; which meeting or event you are attending at the moment), your GPS location, and other pertinent details, intelligent metadata could finally deliver the promise of easy organization, search and retrieval of images. What are the real roadblocks?
  • Megapixels: Truth and Consequence
Moderated by Sally Wiener Grotta, DigitalBenchmarks
Panelists: Ed Dowski, CDM Optics; Bob Gann, HP; Don Williams, Eastman Kodak Company; Eric Zarakov, FotoNation

The industry has been racing along the megapixel highway ever since the first digital camera shipped. Experts can argue for hours about why those additional megapixels should deliver better prints. But the reality is that those extra megapixels may be more of a marketing strategy than a real advantage to consumers. To make matters worse, the majority of digital capture devices being sold today are camera phones, where megapixel means less than ever before.

Benefits of Attending:

  • Extensive networking opportunities with the leaders in the imaging industry
  • Opportunity to learn about the technologies that are driving the future of imaging
  • Presentations from industry analysts to help you find out where
the real growth opportunities are and where the reality won't meet
    the hype
