Camera phones – How good is good? Can we really measure image quality in an accurate and useful way?

The processes and metrics for measuring and reporting the image quality of mobile imaging devices are grounded in the same methods and techniques that have been used for characterizing photographic and digital imaging systems for decades. The fundamental objective measurements are those that define spatial resolution, tone and color reproduction, sensitivity, noise, and geometric fidelity.

The I3A Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Initiative group has developed objective metrics for a number of important characteristics that affect image quality, and evaluated and characterized the observer impact of those parameters on perceived quality. These new, innovative techniques for the subjective evaluation of camera phone images, used in conjunction with standardized, objective metrics for image quality, produce consistent, repeatable results using live human subjects to evaluate the quality of pictures taken using today’s camera phones.

    This Technical Forum will:

    • Detail the innovative developments of the CPIQ Initiative Group to date
    • Provide insight into the measurement and testing methods and philosophies developed by CPIQ
    • Explore the importance and application of subjective testing in determining image quality
    • Offer insight into the specific objective metrics and methods being published by CPIQ
    • Provide a look into the future and final outcome of CPIQ – the Consumer Image Quality Rating System
